Josettante Hero Movie Review

Anoop Menon is one actor who amazingly made a good fan following within the very short time he is into acting business. The actor with a number of fans in the families is in a juncture where he can work out on his roles and films and turn a more dependable star and find a place among the top brass of Mollywood. But as that happened with Siddhique, Kalabhavan Mani and Biju Menon  a few years ago , Anoop is handicapped  with his wrong role selection in a couple of recent films, which may resist him in his travel to the status of a more bigger star.

The latest from the star ' Josettante Hero, directed by K K Haridas is one film whose theatrical performance depends largely on the star in Anoop Menon. But provided with a film that doesn't offer anything fresh other than the performances of him and also Vijayaragahavan  , Anoop must also make sure that he is not  making a mockery of his fans. What he is needed to do at this hour is to accept those films only, which really answers the demands for more different narratives and story lines.

The movie has Vijayaraghavan as Josettan, a struggling producer with a lot of personal problems who always loved to create quality flicks. But unable to move with the trends of the times, Josettan finds his last chance of resurgence in the offer from the very popular heroine Haritha(krithika Kapoor), who was one introduced to the industry by Josettan. Haritha takes every step to support Josetaan by earmarking maximum dates to the film, evading her Tamil producers. Ravi Prakash(Ashokan)) the reigning superstar and another find of Josettan  initially agrees to the project with something else on mind, but later denies from participating even in the photo shoot of the film. Left in turmoil Josetten now decides to take it as a challenge and   agrees to Haritha's suggestion of casting the movies still photographer Saajan as the hero. The rest of the movie is pretty predictable as Ravi Prakash can't stay aloof watching a new star in the making and Sajan will not find it so easy to shift the profession on a single night.

Seriously doubted as yet another case of creating a film just for that satellite rights,  Suraj and Sudheesh are introduced in shorter scenes for boosting that Satellight tag. The Story by Anzar Kalabhavan and  Sathyan Kolangad doesn't offer any freshness, as Anoop's last film 'Mullassery madhavan Kutty 'was also in similar lines except that Anoop's character in that film was  as an ordinary man suddenly forced to direct a movie .The dialogues are also pretty average, with the attempts on humour' falling flat. Director K K Haridas, who is currently in a stage similar to that of film's Josettan, sadly but desist any attempts to work in a more appreciable way. It's his shoddy direction that acts as a speed breaker of the entire film and the less said about the climax, the better.

The performances by the cast are uniformly average, though Anoop's Thrisuur slang appeared good.  Kriti Kapoor, is seen lost in demanding role, while Vijayaragaavan, Zeenath and Ashokan played appreciably in their roles. The rest of the cast etches out below par performances.

In the end of it all, this 'Josettante Hero' is not that engaging stuff  to qualify as an average cinema. It's better for the Anoop fans to wait at their homes for better offerings from the star, which we are sure to come up in a couple of months.

M L A Mani, Patham Classum Gusthiyum Movie Review

It is after quite some time that Kalabhavan Mani is coming up with a movie, with himself as the hero. For those who had been with the innumerable films from the star, this ' M L A Mani: Patthham Classum Gusthiyum' will not offer much changes in the styling and presentation from that regular Mani movies. Strictly advised for the fans of the star, the movie also seems to offer some hidden agenda- a suggestion of a possible entry of the star into mainstream politics in the near future. The narratives are set in such a way that if such a thing happens, the visuals of this movie can be wisely used to support a thirty minute docu fiction or a wise promotional video for the star plunging into politics.

The movie with that very direct title is all about a political goon with the name Mani, who later mend ways and becomes a popular M L A. Mani is a trusted thug who dares to do anything for the political party he belongs to, in the belief that he is doing all to bring in the better rule for the people. It was his teacher at school who started calling him a M LA, due to his childhood ambition of becoming one. Mani, with his friends( Harishree Ashokan, Anand and Kiran raj ) ready for everything finally finds himself enmeshed in a dirty plan by their mentors  and is sent to jail for eight years for killing a journalist named Nandakishore. After long suffering, he is now back with a vengeance, taking on the state ministers for Home (Vijayaragahavan) and industries (Shammi Thailakan). In the meantime, Mani also finds suitable allies in a I P S officer (Siddhique) and a lady M L A(Lena) who also have got things to settle with the political superpowers of the state.

The movie directed by Sreejith palery has a storyline that could have been made into a better film, but as of now, there are too much of illogic sequences built in to boost the heroism of the central star. Here you will find the protagonist leaping into the home of the home minister and threatening him unscathed, and often you may find him engaging into physical fights on public roads with state ministers- all under the nose of police men of high ranks, hardly taking any action. Though very few sequences are convincing enough for a well made action thriller,  hardly a single frame goes with out Mani, and the actor has immense possibilities to show off his abilities in emoting and action. The dialogues by T A Shahid are good at times, but the execution is not that good with the director needing to built on his abilities to create a whole some entertainer. The climax and its leads are pretty predictable and contrived and with a half dozen of killings and heavy doses of violence, the movie many not be a right offer for families either. Moreover, the movie about youths sacrificing themselves for political agendas, also fails to get its good message across and end up just as yet another action flick.

The only highlight of the movie is the songs and music of the movie. Almost all of them are immensely likeable, sung and set to tunes by Kalabhavan Mani himself. Of the four in the movie, we would like to pick 'Ambalakadavil' as the best, though there is nothing remarkable in their visuals. The technical sides led by Sudhi and Mendos Antony are strictly average.

All in all, this ' M L A Mani: Patthham Classum Gusthiyum' may cater to the die hard fans of the star. In the Box Office, the movie may not survive over a couple of weeks.

22 Female Kottayam Movie Review

Director Aashiq Abu’s 22 Female Kottayam is a brave attempt, packaged in a stylish way. The film talks about the journey of a nurse Tessa K Abraham that takes some unexpected turns, after she falls for a wily guy, during her stay in Bangalore.

The film’s title lists three inspirations (conveniently shown as ‘filmography’) – Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, Sriram Raghavan’s Ek Hasina Thi and N Sankaran Nair’s Cabaret Dancer. Tessa K Abraham (Rima Kallingal) is a young nurse, who hails from Kottayam and is now working in Bangalore, hoping to find a job abroad. Her parents are dead and she has a younger sister, studying in Kochi. She lives with two other girls, one of whom is having a cozy relationship with a married older man, DK (Sathar).

Tessa’s life changes abruptly after the meeting with a young man named Cyril Mathew (Fahadh Faasil), working in an immigration consultancy. She falls for his ample charms quite easily and even moves in to his apartment as she waits for her visa. But as she learns soon after, fate had different plans in store for her.

Well, there is an honest attempt to make a genuine film here. It has been presented very well, especially with top-notch visuals by Shyju Khaled and superb music by Rex Vijayan and Biji Bal.

But the problem is with the film’s script, written by Abhilash K Nair and Shyam Pushkaran, which is full of contradictions. Though it is being projected as a female oriented theme, things ends up as ‘male chauvinistic’, at times. The whole story has been set in a modern backdrop but search deep and you find that the modern world is being shown nothing more than one of booze, sex and hypocrisy.

The areas that needed more focus have been handled with in a less serious way. The character of Tessa itself is rather half-baked, with her nature fluctuating quite abruptly. At times she is naïve and gullible, but moments later she can be smart and even bold. Her transformation from a weak hearted simple girl to a tougher woman perhaps holds the key to the proceedings later on, but the focus is not really on her during those scenes. The strengths in ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ ends up as less effective, in this version.

More details about all these could take away the fun and we would just leave it at that. There are flaws, yes. The film could have been more gripping, yes. But that doesn’t take away the sincerity with which the film has been made. The film is way ahead of some of those celebrated and more successful films that we come across in Malayalam.

After ‘Nidra’, Rima Kallingal comes up with a spectacular performance, yet again. She has poured her heart into her character and it needs to be appreciated. Fahadh Faasil is really good and so is the film’s other recognizable actors like Sathar, Prathap Pothen and T G Ravi.

22 Female Kottayam may be far from perfect, but it is a movie in the right direction. Such efforts should be well appreciated, as it is a step that leads to better cinema.

Cobra Malayalam Movie Review | Mammootty Latest Film

Two non-identical twins, Raja (Mammootty) and Kari (Lal), who are wealthy and stupid, continue announcing their love for each other and are in search for two sisters to become ‘co-brothers’ after their marriage.

If your idea of comedy goes on these lines, Cobra can work for you in parts. In their efforts to make the viewers laugh veteran actors Mammootty and Lal (known as the ‘Cobras’ in this film) does virtually everything that they can from yelling out lines after lines of buffoonery, dancing, drinking, romancing and even, boxing. Joining them in this endeavor are their security men, played by Salim Kumar and Maniyanpillai Raju.

A little later the ‘Cobras’ start wooing Sherly (Padmapriya) and Annie (Kaniha), the daughters of a businessman named John Samuel (Lalu Alex). The villains make their appearance soon after and there are some surprises in store as well, but how effective is it will perhaps decide your level of intelligence.

With a wafer thin storyline and shaky script, Lal manages to stitch together a rather meek entertainer that lacks much fizz. The story is a rehash of some of the earlier hits like Thenkasippattanam, Thommanum Makkalum and so on. Venu’s visuals are good and Alex Paul’s music perhaps suits the mood.

Mammootty tries hard to look funny but isn’t it pretty odd to imagine him playing a chronic bachelor in search of a bride? Lal repeats his trademark antics. The rest of the cast, including the heroines, too does their parts in a predictable manner.

‘Cobra’ is evidently a botched up version of the conventional recipes, which have long been regarded as the necessary ingredients for a hit. But the problem is that this one comes at least a decade after such patterns have gone out of the viewer’s interests.

This one is perhaps tailor made for hardcore Mammootty fans only!

Mayamohini Malayalam Movie Review

Director Jos Thomas’ Mayamohini, is light and easy and enjoyable for the most part, as Dileep plays Biju Menon’s wife. In a fast moving storyline with plenty of twists and turns, Siby K Thomas-Udayakrishna scripting pattern never really expects the viewer to think too much.

Balakrishnan (Biju Menon) and his friend Lakshmi Narayanan (Baburaj) are venturing into certain ambitious projects, to rake in some quick moolah. They deal with a number of persons in the process and eventually end up in a terrible mess.

The initial sequences with the two actors who are the bright spots in the film which entertains the viewers. Baburaj, whose knack to tickle the funny bone has been discovered especially after Salt N’ Pepper, is top notch in the entire film. His lines can leave the viewers in splits, big time.

Biju Menon too ably gives him good company and the two manage things in a humorous way, until Dileep makes his entry.

With his innate comic timing, Dileep has succeeded in making his transformation into a woman convincing. His character is that of a north Indian girl named Mayamohini. Things look hunky dory until the first half, after which the sequences get more serious.

The story tends to get a bit shaky from then on, but then there are some nice moments in between that make the going interesting. A lighter storyline, especially in the second half could have perhaps done wonders here.

Director Jos Thomas has perhaps intended the film as a wholesome entertainer, which need not be taken too seriously. Anil Nair’s visuals and Berny-Ignatius’ music mostly suits the mood.

The film's real trump card, however, is Dileep who has taken real pain to present his character in an impressive way. The jokes comes flying at you from all directions, and it's hard not to break into laughs when Dileep participates in the silliness. His scenes with Biju Menon and Baburaj are easily the highlights of the film. Lakshmi Rai and Mythili have limited roles to play. The rest of the cast has done their parts in a fine way as well.

With a briskly paced first half and a more serious second half, Mayamohini still turn out to be a nice option, for the summer holidays.

Masters Malayalam Movie Review

Malayalees, in the recent times, had been rejecting all the formula stuffs and 'old wine in the new bottle' movies, resulting in the downfall of many of the films from the big stars. And as  Prithvi was getting ready to meet the cine goers with his first  film of the year 'Masters', the question often aired was how far freshness can Prithvi and his crew offer  to the Mollywood viewers. The movie which also highlighted the presence of Tamil actor -director Sasikumar to Pia Bajpaai and teaming up of Prithvi with Johny Antony, a director who is specialised in making light hearted moves, clearly created some high flying expectations. Now after watching the movie, the final word is that Prithvi and his crew has fairly succeeded in making a watchable thriller, and the rest of the performance in the B O will now depend solely on the fanfare of the star and its marketing.

The movie has  Prithviraj as Sreeramakrishnan I P S , an young upright ACP whose only big friend is  Milan Paul ,(Sasikumar) a apprehensive journalist, who fear of inviting troubles with his  juicy stories . An intense friendship that started at their college days,  Sree regularly  takes advices from his journo friend whenever he alights  on an investigative spree.

Sree is now assigned to find clues into the murder of a prominent businessman, who has been thrice labelled in rape cases. The murder is reported to have taken place by suicide bombs set by  an young girl named Daksha( Pia Bajpei) who interestingly doesn't have any relationship with the killed person . Shortly thereafter Sreeramakrishan is fated to see some more killings in similar fashion where the actual killers who are unknown to the killed ones are also found dead in the operation. As dead bodies starts piling up, Sree traces the backgrounds  of each of the victims and finds a curious link between the incidents. This forms the backbone of the movie which interests with its wise scheming of the central plot.

It's not the crew or the director but the  debutante scriptwriter Jinu Abraham who  must be surely applauded for weaving a fine suspenseful  thriller from a shallow plot. The crew must also  be congratulated for taking up a theme that deals with the trauma and psyche of innocent victims of rapes and scandals, that has become the daily talk of the state. Johny Antony, who is for the first time into a full length action thriller, takes time to engage us in the opening reels, but offer a intriguing interval and second half, who is devoid of any big pitfalls. The only problem with the movie is that Sasikumar's character of Milan Paul, is not in the lines of his powerful roles that the actor-director has done in his Tamil flicks and his dubbing and lip-sync fails big time, even to give us an air of a miscast. The lead duo also shares no camaraderie and the director's attempts to work on their friendship in the initial sequences falls flat. The climax to the story is not bad, but considering the pace  punch and superb builtup of the second half, it could have been better to opt for a more unpredictable finale.

Taking about performances, Prithvi is in a dependable role that moves in a straight line path. The young actor has done his best and is appealing in the role. Sasikumar  in his debut role is fine, but could have been of more impact , if the dubbing side managed to work a little more sharper. The rest of the cast including Salimkumar, Saikumar , Biju menon, Pia, Mukesh, Sandhya and Ananya does justice to their roles, though they all have very little screen time.

The technical sides of the movie are also fine with Ranjan Abraham making some finer cuts, especially in the second half. Madhu Neelakantan has etched out some good, appropriate visuals and thrilling chases and fight scenes, while the only song 'Suhurthu'  and its visuals remain average. Gopi Sundar's title track is fine, but the BG scores in total fails to reach the benchmark set by the composer in his early films.

All in all, this Masters' is a differently made thriller that may gratify your expectations for an onetime watch. As the ruling superstars of Mollywood fails again to keep their films afloat, it need to be seen how the young star Prithviraj bring in the masses to the screening venues with this fine thriller.

The King And The Commissioner Movie Review

How all can you create a dependable, loyal sequel for two big hits that arrived at least a decade ago? Ask Shaji Kailas and Ranji Panicker, they will say it as wise to pluck in sequences from the originals and to plot them just in the same order  they have done a 15 years ago. Or else, they fear, the sequel may loss the real punch of their originals. This is what you are going to witness, if you are to approach the theatres, screening 'The King and the Commissioner,' as the biggest fans of the originals. And if you are in the habit of looking for anything fresh from the presentation, to the style or takings, then stay away, this is definitely not your cup of tea.

A movie that is made in a prototypes that found masses two decades ago, the 'K& C' presents Joseph Alex Thevally parambil and Bharath Chandran as the same firebrand officers on the move, always alert to act on anything that affects the common man, with that quiver of nonstop dialogues that are sure to kill the supremacy of any dreadful guy of screen, and even the viewers who watch them.  This time Joseph Alex' presently in Delhi , 'have an extra spine' called on by the references of the Malayalee home minister G K (Janardhanan) by the Prime Minister (Mohan Agashe  in an appreciable role) to find clues into the murder of Padmabhushan Dr. Sudharshan (Nedumudi Venu) and Dr. Emma, working with an arm of  Indian Intelligence. Dr. Sudharshan was like a father figure to Joseph Alex, who also suspects a threat to national security and life of the Prime Minister. Halfway through the movie, Bharath Chandran I P S also joins the show thereafter thrashing the baddies and making the movie a showcase of their verbal power.

The movie, a bit over length at 3 hours and 15 minutes, is stuffed with all the cliches of Ranji-Shaji films, from the slow motion walks and fiery introductions to the final showdown at some godown. 'Predictable' is the very first word that flash through your mind from the word go, as Ranji Panikkar doesn't have any screenplay here, but just dialogues and dialogues, to the extend that some most  may even  feel this to be a film that is made to contain all those dialogues. But it also remains a fact that very few dialogues had that killer instinct and emotional punch that has made the some of their originals memorable. Apart from the amateurish  fight scenes at the Boxing ring and the encounter at the SIT office, the director  Shaji kailas had done extra effort in planning the shots and takings but  limped by a poor, predictable and unrelatable screenplay, his efforts seems unrewarded

Coming to performances,  Mammooty and SueshGopi, has done a perfect rendition of their dialogues, which may rock the initial days. Mammooty is graceful than many of his recent avatars and his fans will be more than happy to see the actor in the same old mould, in the soul of the character that he did a 17 years ago with little changes in his looks and style. Sureshgopi, as usual, steal some of the best lines of the multistarrer, though the effort to balance between the two stars makes it a sort of elocution competition at times. Saikumar gives in a controlled performance as a plotting, evil Godman, while Biju Pappan has a notable positive role among the rest played by Samvrutha, KPAC Lalitha, Augustine, and Devan.  Janardhanan once again plays the characteristic hero friendly minister of Ranji script, while Jayan transforms into the league of a more venomous villain with his depiction of Raman Madhavan, the security adviser.

In the technical front, the shots are fine and the editor Samjith  may have found it a hard time to assimilate the movie to the current status with plenty of visual effects, but certain big close-ups remain unwarranted and  breaks the flow of the sequences. And the movie also features one of the poor, ineffective BG scores from Rajamani, apart from the rehash of the  title tracks made immortal by the prequels.

'This King and the Commissioner' may be better savoured by the group who love to repeatedly taste the same cuisines for long. The Mollywood B O reflects that the majority here don't get bored even while served with the same old wine, sometimes even in the same old bottle. If that remains the case for the new generation viewers also, this 'K& C' may end up as mega hit. Or else, after the initial hype and hoopla, it may need exorbitant marketing to manage it in theatres for a long run.

Mallu Singh Malayalam Movie Preview

Young director Vysakh has been exceptional in creating multistar movies that go well with the masses. He had been able to convert his previous two films-  'Seniors' and 'Pokkiri Raja', into big hits. Now the young director is coming up with his third movie 'Mallu Singh' all set to get released this May.

One of the most expected movies of the year, this will be the one of the rare Malayali movies using that Punjabi flavor in the songs and dance sequences with its dominant colors. Featuring Unni Mukundan in the lead with the support cast of the hit gang from his seniors, including Kunchakko Boban, Biju Menon, Suraj Venjaaramoodu  and Manoj K Jayan,  the movie is planned as a fun ride with a impressive family story.

'Mallu singh' was planned with Prithviraj as the hero.. But due to clash of dates the crew has to switch over to Unni Mukundan, who appeared handsome and exceptionally talented with his initial films. The movie thus has become a test for the young actor to enter the big league. If received well at the Box Office, 'Mallu Singh' is excepted to add a new crowd pulling hero into the list of young stars in Mollywood.

Unni Mukundan appear as Hareendra Singh who is running a Dhaba at Mallustreet in Punjab. Ani(Kunchakko Boban) is a commoner from Kerala who had a history of an younger brother running away from his home, a couple of years ago following a local issue. Accidentally, Ani happens to see the visuals of Hareendra singh   in a television programme. Believing that this is his Hari, Ani sets out on a journey to Punjab to find out his closest relative.

The movie will also have a number of heroines- right from Samvrutha Sunil, Meera Nandhan, Rupa Manjari, Aparna nair and Radha Varma.  Saikumar, Siddique, Sreejith Ravi, Suresh Krishna, Jojo, Geetha, Aparna Nair, and Lakshmi Krishnamoorthy lend support as the other important characters of the movie. The music of the film has been composed by M Jayachandran, while the lyrics have been penned by Rajeev Alungal and Murugan Kattakada. The songs of the movie including that in Punjabi beats and flavours are already big hits in the FM's .The songs pictured ala Tamil songs ,choreographed by Shobin Paulraj will definitely stand out  from the rest of the regular songs in Mollywood. While Shaji is in charge of cinematography, Mahesh Narayan does the editing. Produced by Neeta Anto under the banner of Ann Mega Media, 'Mallu Singh' would grace the screens on the lucky weekend of Vysakh, that is the first weekend of May.
