Kayam Malayalam Movie Review

For all those who feel that there are no longer strong roles for women in Malayalam, unlike the past, Kayam poses itself to be one. The whole story is dependent on Swetha Menon's sensuous ways that turns wicked after a while but the film fails to take off, even though it has a decent premise, which is quite disappointing.

The voluptuous beauty Thaamara (Swetha Menon) starts living with a mute and ugly looking Choonda (Manoj K Jayan) in a remote village. She doesn't love him but still, the two gets married soon after. Sometime later, the local baddie Raghu (Anil Murali) brings a team to play 'kabaddi' against Choonda's team, of which the ace player was, Saji (Bala). But Saji realizes that actually 'Choonda' was his long lost elder brother, Divakaran.

Some unexciting twists and turns later, Choonda gets killed and Thaamara sets her eye on Saji, who was in love with Muthu Lakshmi (Aparna Nair). With no definite direction, the story moves along, mostly in an uninteresting way.

Kayam has been in the news for all the wrong reasons when Swetha Menon filed a complaint against using the posters featuring her to promote a sex-enhancer drug. With a promising backdrop and some curious characters, the film shows some promise initially, but the fractured screenplay and the lack of focus comes in the way. It is rather confusing for the viewer to know what the director is trying to say, during most times.

Director Anil and scenarist Viju Ramachandran tries to give the story a classy touch, but they have only limited resources at hand. The visuals by Sadath and music by Mohan Sithara are fine.

Swetha Menon looks sultry and has performed her role in an impressive way. Manoj K Jayan has a brief role but his character is disturbingly loud at times. Bala, Anil Murali, Aparna Nair, Chembil Asokan and Seema G Nair have done their job fine.

Kayam reminds of some of the yesteryear classics like Thazhvaram with its tone and settings, but is no way in the vicinity of those gems. The film has its moments but gives the feeling that things could have been better if it was handled well.
