Karayilekku Oru Kadal Dooram Movie Review

Director Vinod Mankara’s Karayilekku Oru Kadal Dooram is about a writer, whose life virtually revolves around three women. He has a different wavelength with each of them and in fact, his extremely selfish ways spoils the lives of those women as well, to a great extent.

Celebrated writer Anoop Chandran (Indrajith) is unable to get over those good old days that he had spent at college with Sathyabhama (Dhanya Mary). But their romance was rather short lived and he is now married to Meera (Sarayu), who is evidently upset about her husband’s fascination for Gaadha (Mamta Mohandas), a renowned dancer.

It is Gaadha who suggests that Anoop should go to his ancestral village and find some clues about where Sathyabhama lives. The two then goes for a journey where they stay in his old ‘tharavadu’ and also to the campus where the writer had met his first love. There is also a Devi (Lakshmi Sharma) who appears at certain times and reflects the thoughts going through Anoop’s disturbed mind.

In all fairness, the film has its own nice moments. But it essentially belongs to a ‘confused’ genre, as the writer-director seemed not too sure if the film had to be made as a serious film or a commercial entertainer that is with the masala in required measures. The scenes at times become clichéd and the dialogues, disturbingly fake. One of the highlights of the film is M Jayachandran’s music.

Indrajith has to maintain a sober mood throughout the film and that, he does quite well. As a writer, what he is concerned about is his next book only and in the process of writing it, he plays with the emotions of some women without any feeling of remorse. Mamta Mohandas looks beautiful and sensuous as the dancer who is happily having an affair with the married writer. Sarayu and Dhanya Mary have limited roles to play and they perform it fine as well.

It is certainly not a bad film, but it never affects you much as well. One gets the feeling that it could have been more enjoyable, if it was less pretentious and was handled with more passion.
